From the Dr. Dan estate comes this Pohlmann Freehand Virgin Sandblast.
Brad Pohlmann's journey in pipe making is a unique one, as he initially stepped away from crafting pipes to explore a different career before eventually returning to his passion. It all began in 1976, shortly after Brad came back from what he calls a “pipe pilgrimage” to Great Britain, where he visited some of the most renowned brands in the industry. Inspired by this experience, he set his sights on opening a tobacco shop with the dream of selling his own handmade pipes. To gain the necessary skills, Brad embarked on an ambitious hitchhiking trip from San Diego to New York City, connecting with various pipe makers along the way. His aim was to find carver Finn Meyan Andersen, a craftsman he had previously met at a pipe show in NYC. Unfortunately, upon reaching New York, Brad learned that Finn had moved to Vermont to work with The Briar Workshop, and by the time Brad arrived there, Finn had already left. Undeterred, Brad chose to stay and collaborate with Elliott Nachwalter and Jorg Jemelka, eventually welcoming J.T. Cooke into their group of pipe makers. This collaboration allowed Brad to spend five years perfecting his craft.
In 1980, with his skills sharpened, he returned to California to complete a four-year Tool & Die apprenticeship, focusing on enhancing his pipe machining techniques. However, this path led to a surprising turn as he transitioned into the computer industry for the next 16 years, with minimal time to dedicate to pipe making—only crafting a handful for friends or occasionally repairing others.
Finally, in 2003, Brad reignited his passion for pipes by founding Pohlmann Pipes, embarking on full-time carving that delighted both customers and collectors alike. Now based in the serenity of rural Oregon, he shares a workshop with fellow pipe maker Silver Gray, where the inspiring backdrop of the towering trees and clear rivers of the Pacific Northwest fuels their creativity.
Brad's expertise in tool and die making makes him an artisan who emphasizes engineering excellence in pipe design. His pipes, made from vulcanite and Delrin tenons, often feature stunning accents of exotic woods and horn, with bamboo added on occasion. Each Pohlmann pipe is exquisitely carved from carefully selected briar, finished to highlight the beauty of his craftsmanship, whether in smooth finishes or through Brad’s distinctive sandblasting techniques. No matter the shape or decorative elements, each piece reflects his dedication to quality and artistry.
