From the Dr. Dan estate comes this extremely rare find: Pipes and Tobacco Magazine's 2004 Pipe of the Year that was commissioned to Former and Eltang. A rusticated bent egg from Denmark, the pipe maker's mark shows the Eltang "E", the year 2004 stamped in the "silver" collar, and the number 230/250. This is one of the rarest pieces in the Dr. Dan estate. All estate pipes sold as-is.
Pipe Background:
Pipes and Tobacco Magazine used to commission a noted pipe maker each year to create a limited-production "Pipe of the Year" edition. 2004 was a remarkable year for this effort, as the magazine hired a pair of legendary Danish artisans to design and craft this piece: Hans "Former" Nielsen and Tom Eltang. A sinuous and graceful take on the bent Egg, only 250 were created, this particular briar being number 230 in this edition. The condition is near-mint with some faint chamber carbonizing and little tooth mark, but this is still your chance to own a collaboration from two distinguished Danish artisans.
Pipes & Tobacco was a quarterly magazine with articles about pipes, pipe manufacturing, custom pipes, and tobaccos. Pipes & Tobacco Magazine had a twenty-three year run. Published from Winter 1996, and sadly, Spring 2019 was their last issue. It was the only pipe-focused magazine to have that long of a consecutive run.
