🩺 Cigar Tip: How to Restore Dry Cigars (The Right Way)

Every cigar lover has faced it at some point—you reach for a prized cigar only to find it's gone dry. Don’t panic or toss it just yet. Dry cigars can often be revived, and with the proper care, you can restore them close to their original condition.

At Habana Port, we believe that saving a cigar is a worthy effort, and we’re here to teach you how to do it safely—without cracking wrappers or losing flavor.

🧪 What Happens When a Cigar Dries Out?

When cigars are exposed to low humidity for too long, the oils that give them their distinct aroma and smooth burn begin to dissipate. The wrapper becomes brittle, the draw becomes harsh, and the flavor turns flat or acrid. But all is not lost—if the tobacco hasn’t cracked or deteriorated too much, you can slowly reintroduce humidity and salvage it.

🧰 How to Rehydrate a Dry Cigar (Step-by-Step)

Restoring a cigar requires patience. The goal is slow, controlled humidification to avoid shocking the tobacco and causing the wrapper to split.

You’ll Need:

  • A clean, airtight plastic container (like a Tupperdor)

  • A 69% or 65% Boveda humidity pack

  • Optional: a hygrometer to monitor humidity

Step-by-Step:

  1. Place the cigars in the container, keeping them unwrapped and spaced out slightly.

  2. Add a single Boveda pack (start with 65% if they’re very dry).

  3. Seal the container and store it in a cool, dark place.

  4. Wait 1–3 weeks, checking weekly. Don’t rush. Let the cigars gradually absorb the moisture.

  5. Once pliable and the wrappers are smooth again, you can transfer them to your regular humidor or keep them in the Tupperdor until ready to smoke.

❌ What NOT to Do:

  • Do not use a wet sponge—this introduces too much moisture and can cause mold.

  • Do not put dry cigars directly into a high-humidity humidor—it may split the wrapper.

  • Do not microwave or steam cigars—yes, people try this, and no, it doesn’t end well.

  • Do not store your cigars in a fridge—this will continue to dry your cigars. This tip was propagated by old timers in the age before humidor technology really blossomed in the early 2000s. Never put your cigars in the refrigerator for any reason. The moisture content in refrigerators is way below acceptable humidity range for cigar storage.
